When selecting a plastic pallet, looking only at product dimensions is not enough. Load capacity, the pallet’s own weight, rack-system compatibility, impact resistance and the logistics environment in which it will be used also play an important role in choosing the right product.

Why Do Plastic Pallet Dimensions Matter?
Pallet size is critical for storing goods, loading vehicles, use in rack systems and managing logistics processes efficiently. In European logistics two main pallet sizes are especially common:
- 1200 × 800 mm
- 1200 × 1000 mm
1200 × 800 mm is especially common in commercial distribution and retail; 1200 × 1000 mm plastic pallets are frequently preferred in industrial applications. As logistics systems have developed, modular sub-sizes of these standards have also come into use.
Standard Plastic Pallet Dimensions
Quarter pallet – 600 × 400 mm
The 600 × 400 mm plastic pallet is a modular pallet one-quarter the size of a standard Euro pallet. Thanks to its compact form it can be used in retail stores, product displays, promotional areas, small product groups and fast-moving consumer goods.
Quarter pallets allow products to be shipped on the same handling unit from the logistics centre all the way into the store. This reduces the need for rehandling and contributes to operational efficiency.
Half pallet – 800 × 600 mm
The 800 × 600 mm half pallet is half the size of a Euro pallet and is used especially in retail and FMCG logistics. Its compact form makes in-store display, fast replenishment, small shipments and efficient use of warehouse space easier. Half pallets can also be used directly as display units inside the store.
Euro pallet – 1200 × 800 mm
The 1200 × 800 mm pallet is one of the most widely used standard pallet sizes in European logistics. The Euro pallet format is used in retail, food, beverages, logistics, distribution, automotive and industrial production.
Using standard dimensions helps compatibility with forklifts, pallet trucks, rack systems, trucks and automated warehouses. That is why the 1200 × 800 plastic pallet is one of the most widely used plastic pallet sizes on the European market.
Industrial pallet – 1200 × 1000 mm
The 1200 × 1000 mm plastic pallet is another standard size widely used especially in industrial applications. The larger deck area is an advantage when handling bulky or heavy goods.
1200 × 1000 mm pallets are preferred in industrial production, the chemical and automotive sectors, bulky goods, in-plant logistics and closed-loop handling systems.
Other plastic pallet dimensions
Beyond the standard sizes there are also dimensions aimed at specific industries and special logistics systems: 1000 × 1000 mm, 1200 × 1200 mm and 1300 × 1100 mm.
These pallets may be preferred in operations that handle non-standard products or that have their own closed-loop logistics system. When a special size is chosen, the dimensions of the goods, truck or container capacity, the rack system, forklift entry directions, warehouse layout and the automation system should be assessed together.
How Is Plastic Pallet Load Capacity Determined?
Load capacity on plastic pallets is not expressed as a single figure. The load a pallet can support differs under different conditions of use. Technical data usually include three core load values: static load, dynamic load and rack load. It is normal for these values to differ from one another.
What is static load?
Static load is the load a pallet can carry while stationary on a flat, solid floor. It is the load that can be applied when the pallet is supported across the full floor area. It matters in storage, stacking, stationary holding and in-plant buffer stock. Because the pallet is fully supported by the floor, static capacity is usually higher than the other load values.
What is dynamic load?
Dynamic load is the load a pallet can safely support while goods are being moved and the pallet is in motion. It is important for forklift and pallet-truck use, in-warehouse transport, shipping and production-line logistics.
When the pallet is lifted on a forklift or pallet truck, the load is not distributed evenly across the whole pallet; that is why dynamic capacity differs from static capacity. Selecting a pallet by looking only at static load is not correct.
What is rack load?
Rack load is the load a pallet can carry when it is supported only at certain points on a rack system. In racking the centre of the pallet is not supported by the floor, so the load creates more stress in the pallet structure. That is why rack load is one of the most critical technical values in pallet selection.
In high-bay warehouses, rack opening, pallet support points, load distribution, product weight, pallet temperature and duration of use should be assessed together. For products that will be used in racking it is important not to exceed the rack-load capacity stated by the manufacturer.
The Difference Between Static, Dynamic and Rack Load
- Static load: the load the pallet can carry while stationary on a flat floor
- Dynamic load: the load the pallet can support while being moved with a forklift or pallet truck
- Rack load: the load the pallet can carry when supported at limited points on a rack system
A pallet with a high static capacity should not be assumed to carry the same weight safely in a rack system.
Why Does Plastic Pallet Weight Matter?
The pallet’s own weight is an important factor affecting technical performance. Weight is related to the amount of raw material used, structural design, load capacity, pallet class and reinforcement features. In general, pallets that use more material and are reinforced may have a higher load capacity.
However, a heavier pallet does not always mean a stronger pallet. In modern design the aim is to achieve the required mechanical strength with the lowest possible amount of material. Rib structure, foot design, runner geometry, raw-material selection, metal reinforcements and plastic distribution are as important as the pallet’s total weight.
Light plastic pallets
Light-duty plastic pallets are developed for low- and medium-level handling needs. They may be preferred in export, one-way shipments, light goods and distribution operations. A low pallet weight can help reduce total shipping weight during transport.
Medium-duty plastic pallets
Medium duty plastic pallets offer a balanced solution between light- and heavy-duty products. They are used in repeated use, warehouse logistics, in-plant handling and retail distribution.
Heavy-duty plastic pallets
Heavy duty plastic pallets are developed for high load capacity and intensive operations. Stronger structural designs and high-performance raw materials are used. They may be preferred at high loads, in long-term use, automotive logistics, industrial production, rack systems and closed-loop logistics. Some models may also use metal or structural reinforcements to improve rack performance.
What Is Plastic Pallet Strength?
Pallet strength is not measured by a kilogram figure alone. In real operations, performance against impact, dropping, forklift collisions, repeated use, temperature changes and deformation under load is also part of durability. In intensive logistics, continuous use with forklifts and pallet trucks makes impact resistance especially important.
How does raw material affect pallet strength?
One of the most important factors that determine durability is the raw material. PP, HDPE, rPP and rHDPE are widely used in pallet production.
PP pallets are preferred in applications that require high rigidity and good load-carrying performance; they offer an advantage in dimensional stability. HDPE pallets stand out with impact resistance and low-temperature performance. HDPE-based pallets can be advantageous for cold stores, frozen-goods logistics and environments with a high impact risk.
Pallet Strength and Total Cost of Use
When buying a plastic pallet, looking only at the purchase price is not enough. Using a more durable pallet for a long time can reduce total cost of use. The total cost of a lower-priced pallet that is replaced often and of a pallet with a higher initial cost that is used for a long time can differ.
One of the core criteria that should be assessed is Total Cost of Ownership – TCO (Total Cost of Ownership). Purchase price, service life, repair need, loss rate, load capacity, downtime and recycling value should be considered together.

When determining the right pallet, the following technical parameters should be assessed together:
- Pallet size
- Static load capacity
- Dynamic load capacity
- Rack load
- The pallet’s own weight
- Raw-material type
- Operating temperature
- Forklift and pallet-truck compatibility
- Rack system
- Weight distribution of the goods
- Frequency of use
- Impact risk
- Export or internal logistics use
- Automation-system compatibility
Instead of selecting by kilogram capacity alone, assessing all operating conditions together gives a more accurate result.
